Chabangu goes AWOL at Baberwa

Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows midfielder Lerato Chabangu is said to have gone AWOL at his club.

The former Bafana Bafana player was given a second chance with hopes of reviving his ailing career by ABC Motsepe League outfit Baberwa FC after hitting rock-bottom.

Last season, pictures of the 33-year-old looking frail made the rounds on social media. A search was deployed to track him down in order to assist him get back to his best after falling off the radar.

Chabangu’s boss Joe Seanego gave him a lifeline with hopes of helping the team get promotion into the National First Division, however the skillful midfielder was unfortunately nowhere to be found and has not reported for training for six weeks according to a source close to both parties.

“Chabangu has gone Awol, he has not pitched for pre-season ahead of the new season,” confirmed the insider, as quoted byDailySun.

“He pleaded publicly for another chance and the club gave it to him. They took a big chance on him and gave him a good salary.

“He was not even fit when he came here, but the chairman thought he was a quality player who could help the club gain promotion to the National First Division. It’s just sad that he has not grabbed this opportunity with both hands.”

Despite the Tembisa-born player yet to pitch, Seanego was hopeful he would resurface.

“It is true that he is currently not with the team, but we are confident he will pitch soon. He is still a good player who can contribute a lot to the team and we are looking forward to his return,” said Seanego.

Baberwa, meanwhile have Zambian midfielder Clifford Mulenga and former Moroka Swallows defender Tsietsi Mahoa currently sweating it out at the club as they hope to earn themselves deals.
